Symbiosis is a collective that seeks to provide a creative and sustainable solution to address the issue of food waste. Recognising the potential in what may be seen as waste, Symbiosis innovates these discarded products into new textiles. These newly created textiles give a second life to food waste and contribute to sustainable fashion and design development. This process reduces waste and encourages a circular economy approach, fostering a more sustainable and eco-friendly world.

FAQs
HOW LONG DOES THE MATERIAL LAST BEFORE BIODEGRADING?
It completely depends on how the material is preserved; the damp conditions will lead to fast biodegradation. The material undergoes biodegrading when involved in a compost environment. There is more on this in our Sustainability Statement, but one of our first materials has been preserved since January 2023
DOES IT SMELL?
I’ve experimented with working with essential oils to change the smell of the material, which positively affects the scent. The material doesn’t smell bad without the essential oils and resembles fruit.
WHERE IS YOUR FOOD WASTE SOURCED FROM?
Through my work in hospitality venues, I have asked many questions and experiences to work with the waste products of these venues. The fruit pulp is sourced from a juicer at the local canteen, ‘Iydea,’ located in the North Lanes. Our expansions with other materials will be sourced from similar avenues.
HOW LONG HAS IT TAKEN YOU TO DEVELOP THE FRUIT PULP MATERIAL?
I’ve been working on this material from the 31st of October 2023 to the final recipe discovered on the 13th of January 2024. The three-month process involved a lot of trial and error, but we are excited to show you our process as there is always one step further with my materials.
WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE?
I've been told the material connects to latex and leather. When the material is dried with heat, it turns more like latex with a gloss appearance; however, it is more matte-like leather when naturally dried.
IS THERE ONLY ONE RECIPE, OR IS IT DIFFERENT BY WASTE PRODUCT?
I always want to explore more recipes to find the most sustainable and effective recipe for our biomaterials. Currently, the recipe on our website is working, but through further experimentation, we will update and show you our progress and future work with pomegranate waste up and coming.
